A Devotional for Those Who Have Decided to Follow Christ

“Now You Are a New Creation”
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! — 2 Corinthios 5:17
Whether you decided yesterday or a while back to let the Lord into your life, this choice can totally change everything for you: you've opened your heart to Jesus Christ.
You might still have a ton of questions. Maybe there are things from your past that bring up shame, pain, or confusion. You might be wondering how you'll manage to change certain habits, thoughts, relationships, or behaviors that have been part of your life for so long.
But here's something you gotta know before anything else:
Jesus Christ loves you.
He didn't start loving you only after you prayed or decided to turn things around. He already loved you.
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”— Romans 5:8
Jesus already knew your story before you even thought about getting close to Him. He was aware of your struggles, choices, slip-ups, hurts, and sins. But still, He invited you to come closer to Him.
REPENTANCE IS THE BEGINNING, NOT THE END
Yesterday or days before yesterday, you said: “I repent of my sins.”
That phrase really packs a punch.
Repentance isn't just about feeling guilty for what we've done. It's about owning up to our mistakes before God, turning our hearts towards Him, and starting to head in a new direction.
But here's something key to keep in mind: You don't have to change everything overnight, but your decision to walk toward Him is necessary, and to do what is pleasing to God.
Salvation is just the start of the journey. God will work in you gradually.
Some things will click right away, while others might take a bit longer. You'll need to let go of some habits, give certain thoughts over to God, rethink some relationships, and learn to make choices that align with His Word.
You're not in this alone.
Christ is with you.
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6
YOUR PAST IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY
Perhaps for years you identified yourself with certain decisions, relationships, desires, or ways of living.
But now you are learning something new: Your identity no longer has to be defined by your past.
Your identity begins to be founded in Christ.
The Bible says:
“For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”— Colossians 3:3
This doesn't mean all your struggles will just vanish.
It means you don't have to deal with them alone anymore. Now, you’ve got God by your side.
When temptation hits, you can lean on Christ.
If you're wrestling with thoughts you can't figure out, turn to Christ.
When you have desires that clash with God’s teachings, look to Christ.
If you mess up, you can always go back to Christ.
And when you're unsure about what to do, you can simply say:
“Lord Jesus, help me live in a way that makes You happy.”
GOD DOES NOT CALL YOU TO CONDEMNATION, BUT TO HOLINESS
Following Jesus is all about figuring out how to live the way He wants us to.
The Bible tells us to steer clear of sin, and not just one specific sin.
This covers everything from our sexuality, relationships, words, thoughts, how we treat people, the choices we make, and anything else that might come between us and God.
“God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.”— 1 Thessalonians 4:3
Being holy doesn't mean you'll never face struggles again.
It means you now want to make God happy.
When you really want to do that, you start asking yourself:
“Does this make Christ happy?”
Instead of just:
“Does this make me feel good?”
Or:
“Is this what I've always done?”
Or:
“Is this what everyone else does?”
But rather:
“What does God think?”
WHEN YOU FALL, GET BACK UP:
You might trip up on this journey. Maybe you'll slip back into an old habit you thought you'd kicked.
Don't let the enemy convince you: “You've messed up. God doesn't want you.”
Look to God's Word for the answer:
"My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous."— 1 John 2:1
This doesn't mean we should brush off sin. It means that messing up doesn't have to mean giving up.
If you stumble, own up to it:
Ask for forgiveness.
Dust yourself off.
Learn from it.
Reach out for help.
And keep moving forward with Christ.
God's grace isn't a free pass to stay in sin.
God's grace helps us get back on our feet and keep moving toward Him.
DO NOT TRY TO DO IT ALONE
So, you've started your journey with Christ, and it's time to dive into His Word.
Check out the Bible.
Spend some time in prayer.
Join a vibrant Christian church.
Hang out with experienced believers who can help you grow.
Let spiritually mature folks pray with you and support you without making you feel bad.
And don't forget:
You don’t have to hide your struggles from God.
He already knows what's up.
You can be totally honest with Him:
“Lord, this is tough for me.”
“Lord, I'm still dealing with this.”
“Lord, I don't know how to handle this.”
“Lord, help me.”
And you can trust that He’s listening.
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”— Hebrews 4:16
JESUS IS NOT FINISHED WITH YOU
Yesterday was just the beginning.
Don't measure your new life by how much you've changed in a single day.
Focus on the direction you're moving towards instead.
Yesterday you said, “I repent.”
Now start saying:
“Lord, teach me to live for You.”
It's not just about leaving your old life behind.
It's about finding a new way of living with Christ.
«My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.» — Galatians 2:20
Jesus wants to change your heart, thoughts, decisions, and your whole life.
It's not because He's turning you away. It's exactly because He cares about you.
A PRAYER FOR YOUR NEW JOURNEY
Dear Jesus,
I just want to thank You for welcoming me when I came to You.
You know everything about my past, my sins, my struggles, and everything
I still need to work on.
I don't want to hide anything from You.
I want to learn how to live in a way that makes You happy.
Help me steer clear of sin and live a holy life.
Especially give me a hand with the parts of my life where
I'm still struggling and not sure how to move forward.
Give me strength when I'm tempted.
Give me the wisdom to make good choices.
Surround me with people who can help me grow.
When I stumble, help me get back on my feet.
When I'm scared, remind me You're right there with me.
When I feel guilty, remind me of the grace I found at the cross.
Teach me to love Your Word, to seek You in prayer, and to follow You every day.
I don't just want to say I believe in You.
I want to learn to live for You.
Take my life, Lord.
Shape me into the person You want me to be.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
REMEMBER THIS TODAY:
Your past doesn't define you.
Your mistakes don't define you.
Your sins don't define you.
You're someone who's starting a journey with Christ.
Even though there's still a lot to learn and change, keep this in mind:
Jesus loves you. Jesus forgives you. Jesus can transform you. Jesus is with you.
And this journey is just getting started.
“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. So walk in Him.”— Colossians 2:6
